Passport Validity and Expired Passports

Passport Validity

Most visa applicants must have a passport valid for at least 6 months past the date of their anticipated departure from the United States. Due to a special agreement between certain countries (including Taiwan) and the United States, passport holders of these countries may enter the United States with passports that will expire in less than 6 months. However, they will not be permitted to remain in the U.S. beyond the validity of their passports. 

A Valid Visa in an Expired Passport

You may continue to use your U.S. visa until the date it expires, even if the visa is in an expired passport.  You must travel with the expired passport containing the valid visa and a new valid passport issued by the same country.  It is not possible to "transfer" a currently valid visa into a new passport - You must either travel with two passports or apply for a new visa.

Effective April 1, 2004, all indefinite validity visas became void.  Therefore, if you have an indefinite validity visa you must apply for a new visa for travel to the U.S.
