Junior senator

U.S. presidents are allowed to serve two four-year terms, but U.S. senators can serve as many consecutive six-year terms as they wish, as long as they can continue to win elections for their seats.  Each U.S. state has two senators, and the more recently-elected senator from each state is often referred to as the “junior senator.”  Seniority can be very valuable in the Senate, and senior senators often hold greater responsibility and influence.
