2016 Fishackathon to be Held in Taipei and Kaohsiung

The American Institute in Taiwan is pleased to announce that the 2016 Fishackathon, an opportunity for coders and science enthusiasts to come together and find solutions for sustainable fishing, will take place in both Taipei and Kaohsiung on Earth Day weekend from April 22-24, 2016.

Fishackathon, organized by the Secretary’s Office of Global Partnerships of the U.S. Department of State, calls on participants from all around the world to work together to create new applications and tools for use on mobile phones and other devices to help fishermen work smarter and more safely in sustainable fishing.

In conjunction with events held in over 40 cities around the world, Fishackathon Taipei and Kaohsiung will challenge coders to help identify issues facing the ocean, fish and fisheries and to develop mobile and technological solutions to these real-world problems.  At the end of the weekend, teams will present their solutions to a judging panel. The winners of each competition will receive local prizes, and their projects will also be judged internationally for a chance to win a grand prize. 

Whether you’re an amateur coder or a technology whiz, whether you know all about ocean issues or you can’t tell a fish from a jellyfish, you can join Fishackathon!  More details on Fishackathon Taipei and Kaohsiung as follows:

Fishackathon Taipei:

In partnership with Fisheries Agency, American Innovation Center and Microsoft Taiwan, the Fishackathon Taipei will take place at Star Rocket of the Syntrend Creative Park.  Other local partners that will facilitate event, talks, and outreach as part of the Fishackathon include Syntrend Startup Foundation, Taiwan Design Center, Biodiversity Research Center of Academia Sinica, the Institute of Marine Affairs and Resource Management of National Taiwan Ocean University, IBM Taiwan, Ocean says, Chunghwa Telecom and Department of Information Technology of Taipei City Government.

Fishackathon Kaohsiung:

Fishackathon Kaohsiung will take place at the National Sun Yat-sen University College of Marine Sciences in partnership with Kaohsiung Marine Bureau, Kaohsiung Maker Association and National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU). Other local partners organizing the event include the National Kaohsiung Marine University, NSYSU Office of Industrial Collaboration and Continuing Education Affairs/ The Social Enterprise Development & Research Center, Microsoft Taiwan, IBM Taiwan, Maker Wisdom, and Chih Yao System Technology Corporation.
