Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel B. Poneman to Visit Taiwan December 12-14

U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel B. Poneman will visit Taipei from December 12-14, 2011 as part of his trip to Asia. Deputy Secretary Poneman will be the highest ranking U.S. Government official to visit Taiwan in over a decade.
During his stay in Taiwan, Deputy Secretary Poneman will meet with President Ma Ying-jeou, other senior government officials and U.S. and Taiwan business leaders. On Tuesday, December 13, Deputy Secretary Poneman will deliver remarks at National Taiwan University focused on how the United States and Taiwan can work together to tackle tomorrow’s energy challenge.
Building on extensive existing ties, Deputy Secretary Poneman will promote greater public and private sector cooperation between Taiwan and the United States in a number of fields, including scientific research, nuclear energy, and renewable energy technologies. He will also discuss public power utility reform.
Mr. Poneman was nominated by President Obama to be Deputy Secretary of Energy on April 20, 2009, and was confirmed by the United States Senate on May 18, 2009. Under the leadership of Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, Mr. Poneman also serves as Chief Operating Officer of the Department.
