Taipei Hosts 2010 Daniel Pearl Day of Music

The American Institute in Taiwan is pleased to co-sponsor the 2010 Daniel Pearl Day of Music, a free concert that will take place at Treasure Hill, 230, Dingzhou Road, Sec. 3, Lane 230, Taipei, on Saturday, October 2, 2010 from 2:00 to 10:00 p.m.

The 2010 Daniel Pearl Day of Music will include live performances on two outdoor stages by 12 music groups comprised of local and foreign musicians. The groups reflect a variety of musical genres, including bluegrass, blues, country and rock & roll. The event's co-sponsors are the Daniel Pearl World Music Days organization, the Taiwan Foreign Correspondents Club and the Taipei Artist Village.

An accomplished journalist and musician, Daniel Pearl died tragically in 2002 at the hands of terrorists while serving as the South Asia Bureau Chief for the Wall Street Journal. To celebrate his life, Daniel's musician friends came together to launch the Daniel Pearl World Music Days in 2002, an event that has led to annual worldwide concerts in October memorializing Daniel and spreading a message of tolerance, hope and humanity. The event has grown internationally to include more than 4,900 performances in 102 countries. Taipei was among the first cities to participate in this event, and this year's concert will be the city's ninth event honoring Mr. Pearl.

In a public message, President Barack Obama wrote, "I am pleased to send greetings to all those gathered for the 9th Annual Daniel Pearl World Music Days. Throughout history, music has shown a limitless capacity to open our hearts and spur our imaginations. It enriches moments in time, shapes our understanding of one another and unites cultures and nations without regard to language or borders. These events honor the legacy of Daniel Pearl and help lift up countless lives. As you participate in this month-long celebration of music, let us recommit to promoting tolerance and fellowship throughout the world. I wish you all the best for an enjoyable event."
