South China Sea Arbitration Ruling: What Happened and What’s Next?
U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, July 12, 2016, 9 pages.
“On July 12, 2016, the arbitral tribunal adjudicating the Philippines’ case against China in the South China Sea ruled overwhelmingly in favor of the Philippines, determining that major elements of China’s claim—including its nine-dash line, recent land reclamation activities, and other activities in Philippine waters—were unlawful. Predictably, China reacted negatively to the ruling, maintaining it was ‘null and void.’ China may take assertive and inflammatory steps to defend its position. The extent to which China abides by the ruling in the long term, and to which the international community supports and seeks to enforce the ruling, will have consequences for the utility of international law as a tool to ensure the peaceful, stable, and lawful use of the seas going forward.” (From the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission)

“The United States' principal aim in Europe and Northeast Asia should be to maintain the regional balance of power so that the most powerful state in each region-for now, Russia and China, respectively-remains too worried about its neighbors to roam into the Western Hemisphere.   Isis represents a serious threat to them but a minor problem for the United States, and the only long-term solution to it is better local institutions, something Washington cannot provide.”  (From Foreign Affairs)

The Truth About American Unemployment: How to Grow the Country’s Labor Force.

     Foreign Affairs, July/August 2016 issues, 9 pages.
"Many economists worried that even if the U.S. economy improved, unemployment would remain high for years to come. Some warned darkly of a ‘jobless recovery.’ Those fears have proved unfounded: since peaking at ten percent in October 2009, the U.S. unemployment rate has fallen by half and is now lower than it was in the years leading up to the crisis. Beyond the basic unemployment rate, a broad range of evidence shows that the labor market has largely returned to good health. Compared with earlier in the recovery, far fewer workers are underemployed or underutilized. Long-term unemployment has fallen steadily, from an all-time high of four percent of the labor force in early 2010 to just over one percent today. And adjusting for inflation, average hourly wages have been increasing for more than three years.” (From Foreign Affairs)

Florida has already invested heavily in these measures, as have other states, including New York and Virginia. Every vulnerable state needs to implement similar programs. Mosquitoes can be collected and tested to see if they’re carrying a virus like Zika. By implementing programs to catch and evaluate the insects throughout the affected regions, health officials can provide real-time information on emerging outbreaks.” (From Forbes)
