Secretary Richardson to Visit Taiwan
U.S. Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson will address the plenary session of the annual joint conference of the U.S.-ROC (Taiwan) and the ROC-U.S.A. Business Councils on November 10 in Taipei, Taiwan. The theme of the conference is "Taiwan: Gateway to Asian Business Recovery." Secretary Richardson will travel to Taiwan at the invitation of the U.S.-ROC Taiwan Business Council, a private, non-profit organization of American and Taiwan business representatives.
During his visit, Secretary Richardson will discuss economic and commercial issues of mutual interest to the United States and Taiwan, particularly in the energy sector. He will also meet with representatives of the U.S. business community in Taipei to discuss their participation in Taiwan's economy. Secretary Richardson's visit reflects the extensive economic and commercial ties between the United States and Taiwan. The United States is Taiwan's largest trading partner, absorbing 23 percent of Taiwan's exports and supplying 20 percent of its imports. In 1997, Taiwan was the eighth-largest trading partner of the U.S. and our seventh-largest export market.
Secretary Richardson is scheduled to arrive in Taipei on November 9 and will depart on November 11.
