Statement of U.S. Congressional Delegation Led by Representative Benjamin Gilman upon Departure from Taipei, Taiwan, August 10, 1997
Our Congressional Delegation has just concluded a very intensive and successful mission to Taiwan. During our short stay, we met with President Lee, the Defense Minister, the Foreign Minister and other senior officials to discuss economic, political, and regional security issues. Our meetings were highly informative and productive, characterized by frank and open discussions on matters of mutual concern.
We were pleased to see democracy flourishing in Taiwan and that a booming free-market economy has brought an unprecedented level of prosperity to the people of Taiwan. The United States and Taiwan enjoy strong ties based on shared commitments to democracy, to the rule of law, human rights, and economic freedom.
During the course of our discussions with Taiwan officials, my colleagues and I emphasized the vital nature of East Asia to the United States. We stressed the importance of taking a leading role in the region.
We greatly appreciate the warm welcome and hospitality of the people of Taiwan. On behalf of the delegation, we wish you a healthy, happy and prosperous future.
