Worldwide Immigrant Visa Lottery Taiwan-Born Applicants Not Eligible

Recently there have been a number of inaccurate advertisements in the Chinese-language press misrepresenting the WORLDWIDE IMMIGRANT VISA LOTTERY. In fiscal year 1997 (begins October 1, 1996), under Section 203 (C) of the U.S. Immigration Act of 1990, 55,000 Permanent Resident Visas will be made available to persons from countries that have low rates of immigration to the United States.

"Certain countries that have high rates of immigration, as determined under the law, are excluded entirely from the program..." You may apply if you are a native of any country or area EXCEPT THOSE DEFINED AS "HIGH ADMISSION" COUNTRIES.

For 1997, "High Admission" countries include China (both mainland and Taiwan.)

THEREFORE, MAINLAND AND TAIWAN BORN APPLICANTS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THE FISCAL YEAR 1997 VISA LOTTERY.
