AIT Announces Delegation Representing the American People to Inauguration of Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen

The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) is pleased to announce that it has organized a delegation representing the American people to attend the May 20, 2016, inauguration of Taiwan President-elect Tsai Ing-wen.

Former United States Trade Representative Ron Kirk will lead the delegation. Ambassador Kirk served as United States Trade Representative under President Barack Obama from March 2009 to March 2013. He served as Mayor of Dallas, Texas from 1995 to 2002 and as Texas Secretary of State from 1994 to 1995. Ambassador Kirk’s private-sector positions include Senior Counsel in Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher’s Dallas and Washington, DC offices.

Ambassador Kirk will be joined on the delegation by Ambassador John Negroponte, AIT Chairman Ambassador Raymond Burghardt, and AIT Director Kin Moy and Mr. Alan Romberg.

Ambassador John Negroponte is vice chairman of McLarty Associates, a leading international strategic advisory firm. He served as U.S. Deputy Secretary of State from 2007 to 2009 and Director of National Intelligence under President Bush. Ambassador Negroponte also served as U.S. representative to the United Nations, Ambassador to Iraq, Honduras, Mexico and the Philippines, and as Deputy National Security Advisor under President Reagan. He was a Distinguished Fellow at Yale University and starting this fall he will be Professor of International Affairs at the George Washington University.

Ambassador Raymond Burghardt is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American Institute in Taiwan. He previously served concurrently as Director of East-West Seminars at the East-West Center in Honolulu from 2006 to 2012. He served as Ambassador in Vietnam from 2001 to 2004 and as the Director of AIT-Taipei from 1999-2001.

Mr. Kin Moy is Director of the American Institute in Taiwan. Previously, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs from 2011 to 2014 and as Deputy Executive Secretary in the Office of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Mr. Alan Romberg is a Distinguished Fellow and the Director of the East Asia program at The Stimson Center. Prior to joining Stimson in September 2000, he served as Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy from 1999 to 2000 and Director of the Washington Office of the U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN from 1998 to 1999. He also served in the State Department for 27 years including as Principal Deputy Director of the State Department's Policy Planning staff and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs. Mr. Romberg was the NSC staff member for the PRC and Taiwan in the George H.W. Bush administration.
