New milestones of academic exchange between the United States and Taiwan

The Fulbright Taiwan program is now accepting applications for academic exchanges between the United States and Taiwan. The American Institute in Taiwan is a proud partner of the Fulbright Taiwan program.

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and people around the world. Fulbright offers approximately 8,000 competitive, merit-based grants annually for Students, Scholars, Teachers, Professionals, and Groups worldwide. Grants are available for U.S. citizens to go abroad and for non-U.S. citizens to travel to the U.S.

The Foundation for Scholarly Exchange (Fulbright Taiwan) is one of the more than 50 bilateral organizations in the world established to administer the Fulbright program outside the United States. Fulbright Taiwan is supported by the U.S. Department of State and Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Taiwan’s Ministry of Education.

Over the past 50 years, Fulbright Taiwan has financed over 1,600 Taiwan Fulbright grantees to the U.S. and more than 1,400 U.S. Fulbright grantees to Taiwan. See more at: http://eca.state.gov/fulbright#sthash.jn0ECYRz.dpuf

To encourage students to study and research in the United States, Fulbright Taiwan increased the stipends available for Ph.D. students and also expanded the doctoral dissertation research grantees to the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. For Ph.D. students and doctoral candidates, scholarships from USD 3,000 to USD 45,000 are now available for application.

Please visit the Fulbright Taiwan website for application information at: http://www.fulbright.org.tw/dispPageBox/MainEn.aspx?ddsPageID=FOSEENGHP.

Dr. William Vocke, the Executive Director of the Foundation says, “The Foundation for Scholarly Exchange, Fulbright Taiwan, will celebrate the 60th anniversary in 2017. We hope this signature scholarship which symbolizes U.S. – Taiwan friendship will continue to provide opportunities for Taiwan scholars and students to see the world, and invite Americans to see Taiwan.”

The Fulbright program also offers Language Teaching awards. The Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program (FLTA) provides opportunities for young teachers to go to the United States for one year to teach and assist Mandarin education at American universities and also enroll in classes. They are provided with tuition, housing, airfare, and a stipend. The Distinguished Awards in Teaching Program (DA) provides funding for highly accomplished Taiwan K-12 educators to take part in an intensive professional development program for four months in the United States. Along with their studies, DAs will promote Mandarin teaching in the United States.

For students and FLTAs, the deadline for applications is August 1, 2016 for scholars, professionals, and for DAs the deadline for applications is October 31, 2016. For further information and a full list of Fulbright Taiwan programs please visit: http://www.fulbright.org.tw/
