Kaohsiung American Corner to Open at Kaohsiung Public Library Heti Branch

PR-1446E | Date: 10/31/2014

American Institute in Taiwan Kaohsiung Branch Office Chief Robert DeWitt and Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu will unveil the Kaohsiung American Corner at the Heti Branch of the Kaohsiung Public Library on November 2, 2014.

AIT, in cooperation with the Kaohsiung Public Library, opened the American Shelf at the Baoju Branch of the Kaohsiung Public Library on July 9, 2008. The people of Kaohsiung responded very positively to the American Shelf program, and in recognition of that fact, AIT upgraded the program to an American Corner on November 18, 2009. It was the first American Corner in southern Taiwan. In order to improve services and the learning environment, AIT decided to move the Kaohsiung American Corner to the new Heti Branch Library.

The Kaohsiung American Corner will feature books and DVDs about American history, literature, government, tourism, and English teaching, and picture books for children. It will also feature computers, tablet devices, and audio-visual equipment for visitors. The Corner will host American speaker programs, English-language storytelling, and U.S.-themed exhibitions on a regular basis, providing an abundant source of information about all things American to Kaohsiung residents.

AIT operates two other American Corners - one in Taipei and one in Taichung, and in April 2013, it launched the Mobile American Corner with the Common Wealth Magazine Education Foundation.
