The U.S. craft beer movement began about three decades ago and has succeeded in establishing high levels of quality, consistency, and innovation. Consumers, both domestically and abroad, are increasingly savoring American craft beers, which has led to impressive growth for the industry. In fact, U.S. craft beer sales volume grew by 11% in 2010 in the United States. Notably, U.S. craft beer international sales were up by an estimated 28% in 2010, with some regions reporting increases of more than 90%.

The Brewer Association defines American craft brewers as small, independent and traditional. Small means brewing less than six million barrels per year. Independent means that less than 25% of the brewery is owned by a non-craft brewer. Traditional refers to a focus on beers that are made entirely or mostly from malt.
