"American Footsteps in Taiwan" Tour Exhibit in Taichung September 7 - October 18

The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and our partners are pleased to present the "American Footsteps in Taiwan, 1950-1980" tour exhibit at the Taichung Municipal Office in Taichung City from September 7 to October 18, 2011.

Taichung City Deputy Mayor Tsai Ping-kun and AIT Acting Deputy Director Julie Kavanagh will unveil the exhibit at the opening ceremony, which will be held at 10:00 a.m. on September 7 at the Taichung Municipal Office.

The exhibit reflects the close personal ties forged between Americans and the people of Taiwan during a turbulent historical period in the key era of 1950 to 1980. In addition to the display of a large number of vintage photographs, historic artifacts, documentaries and oral interviews, the exhibit looks back to the relationship between U.S. aid and Taiwan’s development of its economy, military forces, public health, healthcare, culture, and education.

The U.S. Air Force (USAF) used Taichung's Ching Chuan Kang (CCK) Airbase extensively as the primary air hub to support Vietnam War operations. This exhibit, in addition to cooperation with Taichung City Government, also displays valuable collection items from the "American Footprint Museum at CCK Airbase," including USAF vehicles, old photographs and archive documents.

The Taichung Municipal Office, a historical building built in 1921, is an excellent venue befitting such cultural exhibits.
