U.S. Arms Sales to Taiwan - Fact Sheet, Major Arms Sales Announced in 2010 ($6.4 billion) and 2008 ($6.4 billion).

Major arms sales announced in 2010 ($6.4 billion) and 2008 ($6.4 billion)

  • All of the U.S. arms systems sold to Taiwan are used by the United States Armed Forces.
  • Almost all of Taiwan's purchases will be of newly built equipment.
  • Two ships will be refurbished and sold at a fraction of the original cost.
  • The price Taiwan pays is comparable to that for the United States and our partners
  • These systems will enable Taiwan to maintain a sufficient self-defense capability.

January 2010 Arms Sales Notification

  1. UH-60M BLACKHAWK Utility Helicopters (x 60) - $3.1 billion
    Taiwan's UH-60M Blackhawk helicopters will be newly built exportable aircraft. The UH-60M is the U.S. Army's primary multi-mission helicopter.
  2. Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Fire Units (x 2), Training Unit (x 1), and Missiles (x 114) - $2.8 billion
    These will be newly manufactured and are the version used by the U.S. Army.
  3. C4ISR program (Po-sheng) Phase II - $340 million
    Taiwan-tailored C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) architecture with technology similar to the U.S. Navy.
  4. Osprey-class Coastal Minehunter Ship (MHC) (x 2) - $117 million
    The ships will be sold to Taiwan for 5% of the acquisition cost to the U.S. Navy. The cost includes refurbishment and modernization of the ships' equipment and technology.
  5. Harpoon Telemetry Training Missiles (x 12) - $37 million
    The U.S. Navy uses the same missiles.

October 2008 Arms Sales Notification

  1. AH-64D Block III APACHE Longbow Attack Helicopters (x 30) - $2.532 billion
    The Taiwan AH-64D Apache helicopters will be newly built exportable aircraft. The U.S. Army is upgrading its existing models to the same configuration.
  2. Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) Fire Units (x 4) and PAC-3 missiles (x 330) - $3.1 billion
    These will be newly manufactured and are the version used by the U.S. Army.
  3. UGM-84L HARPOON Block II missiles (x 32) and UTM-84L HARPOON Block II Exercise missiles (x 2) - $200 million
    The Harpoon Block II is the primary anti-ship missile fielded by the U.S. Navy and 28 international partners, including Taiwan.
  4. JAVELIN launch units (x 20) and guided missile rounds (x 107) - $29 million
    The premier man-portable, shoulder-fired anti-armor missile currently in service with U.S. Army and Marine Corps as well as other allies and partners.
  5. Spare parts for F-5E/F, C-130H, F-16A/B, and IDF aircraft - $334 million
    All parts are from the same system that supplies U.S. forces.
  6. E-2T Aircraft Upgrade to HAWKEYE 2000 9x4) - $250 million
    Taiwan's existing E-2 aircraft are being upgraded to the HAWKEYE 2000 configuration similar to that used by the U.S. Navy
