Former Yankee Manager Carl Stump Merrill to Visit Southern Taiwan

The American Institute in Taiwan Kaohsiung Branch Office is pleased to announce that former New York Yankee Manager Carl Stump Merrill will visit Kaohsiung City and Taitung County from November 15 to November 20. Merrill was invited by the Kaohsiung American School to conduct a cultural program with the themes of tolerance and teamwork. The program is made possible by a grant from the United States Department of State.
Merrill began his baseball career as a catcher at the University of Maine, where he also played football and earned a degree in physical education. Merrill joined the New York Yankees in 1985 as first-base coach for manager Yogi Berra. He was manager of the New York Yankees in 1990 and 1991. He won his 1000th game as a manager on August 2, 1996, when he guided the Columbus Clippers for a third time. Stump returned to New York in 2005 and was once again named Special Assistant to the General Manager. He continues to hold that position.
In addition to his visit at the Kaohsiung American School, Merrill will also conduct clinics with two baseball teams from Sanming Senior High School and San Sin High School in Kaohsiung. On November 19, Merrill will visit a baseball village in Taitung County to meet with baseball players from Hsin Sheng Junior High School. On November 20, Merrill will visit Hong Ye Elementary School, conduct a clinic with Hong Ye baseball team, and tour Hong Ye Little League Baseball Museum in Taitung County.
Members of the media are invited to attend a press conference at 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 17 in Kaohsiung at Sanming Senior High School at No.81, Jinding Road., Sanmin District, Kaohsiung City, where Merrill will meet with the local media, baseball managers, coaches and players.
