2009 Women Make Waves Film Festival to Highlight American Filmmakers

The American Institute in Taiwan congratulated the 2009 Women Make Waves Film Festival, which includes 12 U.S. films this year.

One of the festival's featured U.S. filmmakers, Julie Dash, will give a lecture entitled "Issues of Female Representation and Racial Identity" on Thursday, October 28, from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at the Taiwan Women's Center.  Ms. Dash's 1991 film Daughters of the Dust, which will open the 2009 Women Make Waves Festival, was the first full-length feature film directed by an African-American woman to receive general theatrical release in the United States.  The film has since been included in the Library of Congress' National Film Registry. 

Ms. Dash's films Sax, Cantor Riff (1997), Funny Valentines (1999), Incognito (1999), Love Song (2000), and The Rosa Parks Story (2002) will also be screened during the 2009 Women Make Waves Festival.  Ms. Dash's lecture will include commentary from American filmmakers Jennifer Phang - the director of Half-Life (2008), the festival's closing film - and Daisy Lin Shapiro - the director of Yours Truly, Miss Chinatown (2008), another festival selection.

The 2009 Women Make Waves Film Festival will be held at Taipei's Shin Kong Cineplex from October 16 to 25, and at locations throughout Taiwan from October 26 to December 31.
