Renowned American Theater Director Robert Wilson's Production of Orlando Comes to Taipei

PR0905E | Date: 2009-02-20

The American Institute in Taiwan is pleased to co-sponsor the 2009 Taiwan International Festival, organized by the National Chiang Kai-Shek Cultural Center. This festival hosts twelve productions from throughout the world, and includes the participation of three celebrated American artists: Theater director Robert Wilson, cellist Maya Beiser and composer Philip Glass.

Orlando will be performed from February 21 to March 1 at the National Theater.  The play's director and playwright, Robert Wilson, is an internationally acclaimed figure in the theater world.  His past productions have included collaborations with Philip Glass, William S. Burroughs, Tom Waits, Allen Ginsberg and David Byrne, among many others.  The New York Times describes Mr. Wilson as "a towering figure in the world of experimental theater and an explorer in the uses of time and space onstage.  Transcending theatrical convention, he draws in other performance and graphic arts, which coalesce into an integrated tapestry of images and sounds."

Orlando is the adaptation of an influential 1928 novel by Virginia Woolf.  Mr. Wilson's production stars actress Wei Hai-Ming, one of Taiwan's most acclaimed performers of Beijing opera, as Orlando.  The play will be presented in Mandarin Chinese, with Chinese and English subtitles.
