Independence Day, traditionally celebrated with picnics, parades, concerts and fireworks, is regarded as the birth of the United States as a free and independent nation.  Most Americas simply call it the "Fourth of July."  This holiday recalls the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.  At that time, the people of the 13 British colonies were involved in a war caused by unjust treatment of the colonies by the king and parliament in Britain.  Since they were not treated as equals, the colonist sought freedom from foreign rule by separating from Britain and declaring themselves independent.

The Taichung American Corner is an American information resource center and meeting place which has a great deal to offer.  The collection of U.S.-related materials includes 1,500 books and video tapes.  The American Corner conducts a variety of American cultural programs, including programs on American literature, American studies, story telling, and digital video conferences. The American Corner is a free wireless hotspot.

The American Corner is located at the National Taichung Library Reference Room, 1F, No. 291-3, Ching-wu Road, Taichung.  To receive your prize or for more information, please call Sonia Lin at the Taichung American Corner at 04-2226-1105 ext. 765.
