The American Cultural Center Presents American Poetry Programs Hosted By Poet Laureate Professor Yu Kuang-Chung

The American Cultural Center is pleased to announce two "American Poetry Programs" hosted by poet laureate Professor Yu Kuang-chung at the American Cultural Center and Taichung American Corner on October 13 and October 14.

Professor Yu Kuang-chung will present 15 poems by 6 distinguished and renowned American poets in each program, and there will be open discussions after the presentations. The public is welcome to attend these two free programs.

The first program, entitled "From Poe to Sexton: An Overview of American Poetry," will take place at the American Cultural Center and Taichung American Corner via a Digital Videoconference session on Thursday, October 13, 2005 at 10 a.m.-12 p.m. The American Cultural Center is located at Room. 2101, 21F, International Trade Building, No. 333, Keelung Road, Section 1, Taipei. The American Corner is located at 1F, No.291-3, Jingwu Road, North District, Taichung.

The second program, entitled "From Whitman to Nash: An Overview of American Poetry," will take place at the Taichung American Corner on Friday, October 14, 2005 at 2:30-4:30 p.m. Professor Yu will host this program in person and discuss the poetry face-to-face with the audience.

Professor Yu Kuang-chung, a professor emeritus of National Sun Yat-Sen University's Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, is widely considered to be Taiwan's poet laureate.  His specialty includes English and American poetry, translation, prose, literary criticism, and creative writing.  He has earned numerous outstanding awards, including the Australian Cultural Award (1972), the honorary membership of Hong Kong Translation Association (1992), and an honorary doctorate in literature from Hong Kong Chinese University (2003).  He has published more than 50 titles on prose, poetry, literary criticism, short story, and translation.  Professor Yu has also translated American poetry collections under auspices of USIA and published by the World Today Press in 1960s.
