AIT Biotech Week Features Lectures On Next Generation Food

The American Institute in Taiwan is pleased to present a lecture by Dr. Kalidas Shetty entitled "The Benefits of Future Biotech Products -- Next Generation Food Biotechnology for Health Management."

This lecture program will be held in Taichung, Tainan and Taipei in conjunction with other AIT Biotech Week activities.  The public and the media are welcome to attend any of the following free lectures being co-sponsored by AIT's Agricultural Section and Public Affairs Section.  Consecutive English-Chinese interpretation will be provided.

Dr. Shetty is a Professor of Food Science at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where his areas of specialization are Food Biotechnology, Food Safety, and Nutritional Management of Disease.  He is also one of the five U.S. Department of State Jefferson Science Fellows for 2004-05.  He was awarded the fellowship by the Secretary of State in recognition of his scientific achievements, communication skills, and interest in science policy issues.  His role as a Jefferson Science Fellow is to act as an expert consultant to advise the U.S. State Department on science issues.

In his lecture, Dr. Shetty will discuss how the development of biotechnology will lead to a new generation of nutritional and nutraceutical products.  The seminar will cover gene modification and the emerging science of "Systems Biology."  He will also focus on the development of new ingredients to fight major health problems such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
