American Corner Opens in Taichung

Director Douglas H. Paal of the American Institute in Taiwan, Minister Chen Chi-nan of Taiwan's Council for Cultural Affairs, and Taichung Mayor Jason Hu opened Taiwan's first American Corner in Taichung on May 7, 2005.

Located in the National Taichung Library, the American Corner aims to foster mutual understanding between the people of Taiwan and the United States.  The corner introduces users to American society and culture via book and multimedia collections, digital video conferences, internet web chat programs, and various speaker and cultural activities.

The American Corner in Taichung is a partnership with the National Taichung Library and is representative of the long tradition of friendship and understanding between the United States and Taiwan.

The vibrant and growing city of Taichung is an ideal place for Taiwan's first American Corner.  The first American Corner opened in Russia in October 2000.  Since that time, over 200 cities in Europe, Asia and Africa have become part of the growing network of American Corners across the globe.  Thanks to the efforts of our partner, the National Taichung Library, and the support of our friends in Taichung, the Taichung Corner will be the latest addition to this network.
