The American Cultural Center Presents Two Lectures by Joan Lebold Cohen, Asian Art Expert and Photographer

The American Cultural Center is pleased to present two lectures by notable art historian and photographer Joan Lebold Cohen. Ms. Cohen is a research fellow at the John King Fairbank Center for East Asian Research at Harvard University, and an associate of the Modern China Seminar at the East Asian Institute of Columbia University. She has published several books on Chinese art as well as of her own photography. 1. Lecture: "The Dynamic Chinese Art Scene: Beijing, Shanghai, New York"
The dynamism of China's new art scene parallels the country's remarkable economic development. Art exhibition venues now include the newly popular Biennials, privately run art galleries (owned by both foreigners and Chinese citizens), and local and overseas auction houses. All of these venues have an effect on the Chinese art market and its development. In this lecture, Ms. Cohen will talk about this market and the current state of contemporary Chinese art in Beijing, Shanghai and New York. She will discuss the current art exhibit "the Shanghai Biennial" (opening September 29, 2004) in particular.

2. Lecture: "An American Photographer in Asian Studies - Photography by Joan Lebold Cohen"

Joan Lebold Cohen has traveled to many parts of Asia, and seeks to comprehend landscapes, cultures, and people in a heartfelt manner through photography. Ms. Cohen's photographs are influenced by her art history background and the aesthetics of Chinese painting. She will talk about her quest to reveal culture, humanity, and nature through photography.
