Container Security Initiative Delegation to Arrive in Taiwan
A delegation of technical consultants from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will arrive in Taiwan today to begin preparations for the future implementation of the Container Security Initiative (CSI) at the Port of Kaohsiung. In coordination with AIT offices, the delegation will meet with experts in Taiwan Customs and other law enforcement agencies in Taipei and Kaohsiung.
The Container Security Initiative (CSI) is an initiative that was developed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The primary purpose of CSI is to prevent the smuggling of weapons of mass destruction in cargo containers. As the fourth largest source of containerized goods entering the United States, the Port of Kaohsiung will be an important addition to the CSI program. The CSI program is already operational at nine ports in Asia, and at more than 20 ports around the world.
