Press Release
U.S. Assistance for Victims of Typhoon Mindulle Remarks by AIT Director Douglas H. Paal July 9, 2004
PR0437E | Date: 2004-07-09
On behalf of the American Institute in Taiwan and the American people, I would like to express my heartfelt sympathy to the people of Taiwan whose lives have been severely disrupted by Typhoon Mindulle. I especially want to offer condolences to the families of those people who died or were injured as a result of the typhoon.
In that regard, I am presenting a check for $50,000 to President Chen Charng-ven and Secretary General Hau Lung-bin of the Taiwan Red Cross. This money, provided by the U.S. Agency for International Development, will be used to extend immediate assistance to some of the households most severely affected by Typhoon Mindulle.
In the past, AIT and the United States have supported the humanitarian work of the Taiwan Red Cross on several occasions, including most recently after Typhoon Nari in 2001. We are confident the Red Cross will use our contribution in the most efficient and effective ways to alleviate suffering and hardship for the typhoon victims.
