The American Cultural Center Presents an Exhibition, Demonstration, and Lecture by Jane Ingram Allen, Fulbright Scholar Award Artist

PR0427E | Date: 2004-05-26

The American Cultural Center is pleased to present three activities highlighting the artistic work of American artist Jane Ingram Allen. Ms. Allen is an American installation artist, papermaker, art critic, fine arts professor, and writer. She has received many grants and awards for her artwork, from such organizations as the New York Foundation for the Arts, the Mid-Atlantic Foundation for the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, and Artists Space. She has been an artist-in-residence at several organizations in the U.S., as well as in the Philippines, Japan, Nepal and Brazil. Ms. Allen's current work focuses on installations that change over time and benefit the environment, as well as viewer participatory installations using handmade paper and other natural materials.

1. Art Exhibition: "Taipei Site Maps"

"Taipei Site Maps" is an extension of the work Jane Ingram Allen created between January - July 2004 as part of her Fulbright "Artist in Residency" Award project at the Suho Memorial Paper Culture Foundation and Museum in Taipei. These "Taipei Site Maps" include representations of many different places in and around Taipei, on handmade paper she created from 27 different plants collected in Taiwan. She dried some of the handmade paper on metal covers with embossed patterns (called 'manhole covers' in the U.S.) that are found in the city streets. She also used other materials, collected in Taipei, to reflect her experience of living in this time and place. Ms. Allen's artwork makes use of recycled paper and low-polluting materials to emphasize environmental concerns, and to encourage a focus on the need for a clean and healthy urban environment.
