"After September 11: Images from Ground Zero" Photo Exhibition Returns to Taipei May 2 - 29, 2003

The "After September 11: Images from Ground Zero" photography exhibition will open at National Taiwan Art and Education Institute on May 2. This is the ninth stop of the exhibition since it was first launched at the new American Cultural Center on July 5, 2002. Since its debut, the exhibition has traveled from Taipei to Kaohsiung, Tainan, Chung-li, Hsin Chu and Taichung County. A total of more than 50,000 visitors have seen the exhibit.

"After September 11" features 27 photographs by New York photographer Joel Meyerowitz, who was granted sole unimpeded access to "ground zero" on September 13, 2001, just two days after the September 11 attacks. Though the events that inspired the exhibit happened 19 months ago, they truly changed the world. One can appreciate the artist's vision even more profoundly through the lens of the new situation in the world today.

Meyerowitz, winner of a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship, said his aim was "to make a photographic record of the aftermath: the awesome spectacle of destruction; the reverence for the dead; the steadfast, painstaking effort of recovery; the life of those whose act of salvation has embedded itself deeply into the consciousness of all of us in America and around the world."

The public is welcome to view the show at the Taiwan Art and Education Institute, daily, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., through May 29. The institute is located at 47, Nan Hai Road, Taipei.
