U.S. Senate Delegation to Visit Taiwan August 6-7, 2001
Senator Joseph Biden, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, will lead a bipartisan delegation to Taiwan on August 6-7, 2001. The primary purpose of the visit is to hold discussions with senior officials on strategic issues bearing on U.S. national security. "This trip comes at a crucial time," said Senator Biden. "The security issues throughout Asia including proliferation and missile defense are of vital importance to the region and to global security."
Senator Biden is a Democrat from the state of Delaware, and has served in the Senate since January, 1973. Other members of the delegation include Senator Paul S. Sarbanes (D-MD), Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA), and Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN).
After traveling to Taiwan, the delegation will also visit the People's Republic of China and the Republic of South Korea.
