America Celebration 2000 to Feature Film Premier Screening & Charity Event

Sponsored by the Commercial Section of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the American and local business communities in Taiwan, a movie premiere and a charity donation reception will be held at the Warner Village, Tuesday afternoon, July 4, 6 p.m. for the America Celebration 2000.

This year's America Celebration's two main events -- the premiere of Warner Bros. film, My Dog Skip, and the charity auctions for Lanyu (Orchid Island) aboriginal children -- are based on the theme of 'children.' Proceeds from the charity auctions and movie premiere will go towards upgrading the educational facilities at the only kindergarten in Lanyu.

Half a million NT dollars in contributions has already been raised from AT&T Communications Services, Aetna Life Insurance, and McDonald's Taiwan. Traditional auctions of donated Microsoft software are being sponsored by Costco in both Taipei and Kaohsiung. The Taipei auction is scheduled July 1, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Taipei American School (800, Chungshan N. Road, Section 6). In Kaohsiung, it will be held at the Kaohsiung Labor Park (132 Chungshan 3rd Road) July 2, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Yahoo! Taiwan is holding an on-line auction from June 19 to June 30. Participating companies include Nike, Far Eastone, Hilton Hotel, McDonald's Taiwan, Northwest Airlines, and Coca-Cola. The public is invited to participate in the auction at this website: auctions.yahoo.com.tw.

These efforts also broadly profile U.S. capabilities in the areas of Internet services, e-commerce, on-line auctioning, retailing, and consumer-goods franchising. The America Celebration 2000 brings the business communities of the United States and Taiwan closer together in partnership.

Many companies have rallied to take part in this initiative and worthy cause. AIT, working with Ronald McDonald House Charities, has arranged for the donation of the charity proceeds, which are expected to exceed NT$1 million. Ronald McDonald House Charities, Taiwan, an organization specifically chartered to serve children who are disabled, disadvantaged, or live in remote areas worldwide, will coordinate the donations and pass the funds to the Lan-an Kindergarten of Lanyu.

UNI Airways has made it possible for eight kindergarten children and their guardians from Lanyu to attend the charity reception July 4. Howard Plaza Hotel has donated hotel accommodations for these special visitors. Warner Bros. has offered "My Dog Skip" for the premiere movie showing. Warner Village is providing viewing facilities for the charity premiere. Planet Hollywood will host the evening reception.
