Arrival Statement of Laura D'andrea Tyson Taipei, Taiwan May 19, 2000
PR0022E | Date: 2000-05-19
I am deeply honored to come to Taiwan as head of the delegation representing the American people to attend the inauguration of President Chen Shui-bian. Americans have been very impressed with Taiwan's democratization over the last fourteen years. They recognize that the transfer of power that will occur tomorrow -- the first in Chinese history as the result of an election -- is a most significant event. It is therefore fitting that there be an American delegation to witness this important occasion, and I am very proud to head the delegation. I bring with me the American people's respect for the people of Taiwan and their achievements. I bring our hope and expectation that the relationship between the people of the United States and Taiwan will continue to be mutually beneficial and contribute to the peace and prosperity of the region.
