American Delegation to Attend Taiwan Presidential Inauguration

The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) is pleased to announce that it has organized a delegation representing the American people to attend the May 20 inauguration of Taiwan President-elect Chen Shui-bian.

Laura D'Andrea Tyson will lead the delegation. Dr. Tyson is Dean of the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley. A distinguished economist and educator, Dr. Tyson served in the Clinton Administration from January 1993 through December 1996. Between February 1995 and December 1996, she served as the Chairman of the National Economic Council. Prior to that appointment, Dr. Tyson served as the Chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisors, the first woman to hold this position. Prior to joining the Clinton Administration, Tyson held a joint economics and business school professorship at Berkeley.

Dr. Tyson will be joined on the delegation by U.S. Congressman Charles Rangel, Dr. Richard Solomon, President of the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP), and Dr. Chang-Lin Tien, University Professor for the University of California and NEC Distinguished Professor of Engineering at its Berkeley campus.

Congressman Rangel is serving his fifteenth term in the House of Representatives, representing Manhattan's East and Central Harlem, Upper West Side, and Washington Heights/Inwood. Congressman Rangel is the Ranking Member of the Committee on Ways and Means, Deputy Democratic Whip of the House, and Dean of the New York State Congressional Delegation. Mr. Rangel is also a member of the Trade Subcommittee of the Committee on Ways and Means, which has jurisdiction over all international trade agreements.

Dr. Solomon was Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs from 1989 to 1992. Solomon also served as U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines from 1992-1993. Dr. Solomon is one of America's foremost experts on the East Asia region and U.S. foreign policy.

Dr. Chang-Lin Tien, a faculty member at the University of California for over 40 years, served for seven years as UC Berkeley's Chancellor - the first Asian American to head a major research university in the United States. Dr. Tien has achieved a remarkably distinguished record as a scientist and educator and is internationally recognized for his research in heat transfer technology.

Mr. Richard Bush, AIT Chairman and Managing Director (Washington office) and Mr. Raymond Burghardt, AIT Taipei Director, will also be members of the delegation.
