Former U.S. Congressman Lee Hamilton AIT Chairman Dr. Richard Bush to Visit Taiwan March 22-24, 2000

Lee Hamilton, Director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and former Congressman from Indiana, and Richard Bush, Chairman and Managing Director of the American Institute in Taiwan, will visit Taiwan this week. Mr. Hamilton will be traveling in a private capacity. He is a senior statesman and respected former colleague of members of Congress.

Mr. Hamilton and Mr. Bush will arrive on Wednesday, March 22 and depart Taiwan on Friday March 24. While in Taiwan they plan to meet with President-elect Chen Shui-bian and his advisors as well as President Lee Teng-hui and members of his Administration.

Before retiring from Congress in 1998, Mr. Hamilton was the ranking Democrat on the House International Relations Committee. He was first elected to the House in 1964. During his 34 years in the Congress, he served as chairman of the Intelligence Committee, the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and the Joint Economic Committee.

He was the recipient of numerous public service and human rights awards during his tenure in Congress, including the Seeds of Hope Award (Bread for the World) in 1998, the Civitas Award (Center for Civic Education) in 1998, the Edmund S. Muskie Distinguished Public Service Award (Center for National Policy) in 1997, and the Center for the Study of the Presidency Public Service Medal in 1990. Hamilton, 69, graduated from DePauw University and Indiana University School of Law.

Mr. Hamilton will make a statement upon arrival at the CKS Airport on Wednesday, and he will make a departure statement on Friday, March 24, prior to leaving Taipei. Details will be announced later.
