Remarks by AIT Director Stephen M. Young at Importer of the Year Award Ceremony Kaohsiung, Taiwan April 20, 2007

Good morning.  It is always a pleasure to visit southern Taiwan, particularly on an occasion that affords me the opportunity to honor companies that make U.S.-Taiwan trade so robust.

Last year, two way-trade between the United States and Taiwan surpassed $55 billion, with Taiwan companies purchasing over $22 billion of US goods and services, ranging from electronics and industrial chemicals to education and medical devices.

Additionally, as the United States is Taiwan's third largest trading partner, and Taiwan is our eighth largest trading partner, all signs indicate that our commercial relationship remains strong.

The strength of the relationship is driven by companies like today's award winners - both small/medium sized companies, that are thriving in southern Taiwan and in their own way strengthening the U.S.-Taiwan relationship.

What distinguishes these companies is their success in creating market opportunities for US products.  Through their persistent efforts, U.S. goods, services, and technologies are being used by some of Taiwan's leading manufacturers.  Not an easy feat for small companies, and a true testimony to business excellence, these companies are deserving of recognition.
