Remarks by AIT Director Douglas H. Paal Vin D'Honneur to Celebrate American Independence Day

Vice Premier Wu, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen:

Thank you for joining us today to celebrate our National Holiday, the day commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence 229 years ago in the city of Philadelphia.

The signing of that document came with a pledge by the 56 men who dedicated "our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor" to the independence of the American colonies and to the principles of liberty and equality.  Americans are extremely proud of that Declaration and the courage of the men who signed it.

We are reminded on this anniversary that our democratic values have been passed from generation to generation, and those values have been honored by millions of men and women whose hard work, sacrifice, generous spirit, and love of country have seen the United States safely through more than two centuries of great challenge and change.

On this day, we are reminded of the importance of our democratic friends and allies around the world.  Together we embrace our common humanity and the values, history, and culture we share.

In Taiwan, these democratic values have been the foundation for a strong and enduring relationship that grows with every day.  As Taiwan continues on its path of democracy and freedom, it will always have a friend in the American people.
