    The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved ractopamine for use with cattle in 2003. This decision was based on years of research and more than one hundred clinical studies that demonstrated that beef from cattle fed ractopamine is safe.

The top consumers of U.S. beef in 2011 were Canada ($1.0 billion - 191,051 MT), Mexico ($927 million - 218,552 MT), Japan ($874 million - 158,450 MT), South Korea ($683 million - 152,621 MT), Russia ($248 million - 68,484 MT), Egypt ($236 million - 147,883 MT), Hong Kong ($232 million - 49,144 MT), Taiwan ($200 million - 35,503 MT) and Vietnam ($192 million - 44,590 MT).
