AIT/Taipei Former Director - Thomas S. Brooks

The Board of Trustees of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) is pleased to announce the selection of Thomas S. Brooks to serve as the new Director of its Taipei office, replacing Mr. David Dean, who retired in December, 1989.

Mr. Brooks was born in 1932 in Wyoming. He and his wife, Claire, have four children. The family home is near Saratoga, Wyoming .

After graduating from the University of Wyoming in 1954, Mr. Brooks was a Fulbright student in France (1954-1956) and served in the U.S. Army (1956-1958).

Mr. Brooks entered the U.S. Foreign Service in 1959. His many foreign diplomatic assignments include service at Hong Kong, Kathmandu, Beijing, Shanghai, and Seoul. He left the Foreign Service in 1981 to serve for two years as the deputy director of AIT's Taipei office. In 1983 he rejoined the service and attained the rank of minister-counsellor in 1986. Mr. Brooks has most recently served as deputy chief of mission and as charge d'affaires at the U.S. Embassy at Seoul, Republic of Korea.

In the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, the U.S. Congress designated the American Institute in Taiwan as the instrumentality to conduct the commercial, cultural and other relations between the people of Taiwan and the people of the United States.
