Copland wrote scores for many early films, including adaptations of Thornton Wilder's play Our Town (1940) and John Steinbeck's short novels Of Mice and Men (1939), and The Red Pony (1948). Not only a gifted composer, Copland became a teacher, an author of books and articles on music, an organizer of musical events, and a much sought-after conductor. He received more than 30 honorary degrees and many awards. For many people, Copland's music uniquely captures the American spirit. He did what he set out to do when he was only 15.
