In 1789, George Washington nominated Jay as the first chief justice of the Supreme Court. Jay's most notable case was Chisholm v. Georgia (1793), in which Jay and the court established that the federal government ultimately has power over the states.

Jay went on to negotiate with Great Britain for the Northwest Territory, and in 1794, became governor of New York before retiring from politics in 1802. John Jay laid much of the groundwork upon which the U.S. was built and flourished. He is one of our nation's founding fathers.
