桃樂絲蘭格的照片所帶給人們的衝擊
雖然照片中的女人才30多歲,但因為她的生活處境艱苦,她必須花費許多時間在炙熱的田野上尋找可供食用的東西,所以她看起來比實際年齡老多了
。蘭格回想拍攝照片時的情景:
「我沒有詢問她的名字或她的過去,她說她今年32歲,並告訴我她們以週遭田野上的冷凍蔬菜及小孩捕殺的小鳥維生
。她剛將車子的輪胎賣掉,並將賣來的錢拿去買食物。她坐在傾斜的帳棚裡,而她的小孩則圍繞在她的身旁,似乎知道我的照片也許能夠幫助她,所以她選擇幫助我。您可以感受到平等

Although she looked much older because she lived such a hard life, much of it spent in the scorching sun of the fields, the woman in the photo was only in her 30s. Lange recalled the circumstances of taking the photo:
I did not ask her name or her history. She told me her age, that she was thirty-two. She said that they had been living on frozen vegetables from the surrounding fields, and birds that the children killed. She had just sold the tires from her car to buy food. There she sat in that lean-to tent with her children huddled around her, and seemed to know that my pictures might help her, and so she helped me. There was a sort of equality about it.
