I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill Last Night

  

        阿爾弗雷德‧海斯(1911─  )生於英格蘭，在紐約市長大，曾為報紙、雜誌、電臺工作。他寫過小說、劇本、詩歌和電影劇本，然而他的作品中最出名的是《昨夜我夢見喬‧希爾》。喬‧希爾(約瑟夫．希爾斯特羅姆)l 902年從瑞典移居美國，幾年後成為激進的產業工人國際同盟成員。1914年希爾被控謀殺了一個鹽湖城食品商。儘管成千上萬人抗議對他的審判不公，最後他還是在猶他州監獄中被五人行刑隊槍決。《昨夜我夢見喬‧希爾》1938年寫於大蕭條時期，成為工會運動特別喜愛的歌曲。

    昨夜我夢見喬‧希爾活著，

    他站在我床前說：

    他驕傲地站在我面前，

    喬說：「凡是沒被他們殺掉的人；

   「喬‧希爾沒有死，」他對我說，

    「喬‧希爾從來沒有死。

    哪裡有工人在鬥爭，

    喬‧希爾就在哪裡，

    喬‧希爾就在哪裡。」

 

    「從聖地牙哥到緬因州，

    每座礦山和工廠，

    只要有工人在團結戰鬥，」

    他說，「你就能找到我，

    你就能找到我。」

 

    昨夜我夢見喬‧希爾活著，

Says Joe, "I didn't die,"

And standing there as big as life
And smiling with his eyes,
