    埃德加‧李‧馬斯特斯(1869一l 950)在伊利諾伊州的一個農場裏長大，後成為一名律師。馬斯特斯雖然寫有許多詩歌、戲劇、小說及傳紀，但最為人知的還是《斯蓬河詩集》。它是一組自由詩體獨白，一首詩代表對虛構的斯蓬河鎮的一位居民的悼念，每一首都揭示出一個小城鎮裏某個居民一生的挫折和失望，其中最著名的大概便是為安妮‧拉特利奇寫的悼亡詩。安妮‧拉特利奇是林肯年輕時代的女友，死 於1835年，死時約十九歲。

我無為、無名的身軀，
