Sometimes the sorting process takes place a few days after the cattle drive. In 1979 on the 96 Ranch, about 700 to 800 cows were sorted. The ranch's usual categories are cows with calves, dry cows (cows not mothering a calf), heifers (milk cows), yearlings, weaner calves (calves recently separated from their mothers), steers, strays (cows from another ranch), and a few bulls for breeding purposes. What do you think happens to the cattle that belong to another ranch?
