Buckaroos use a lot of different techniques to move and keep track of cows. To drive cattle from a thicket of dense brush, buckaroos may stand alongside them making noise--banging on a tin can or shaking a can full of stones. Buckaroos need to be careful when doing this, because it may frighten the cows and cause a stampede.

Another way buckaroos move cattle is to ride down a hill, moving the cows along with them. This audio clip explains the traditional role of the "bell mare," a horse that wears a bell to keep the other horses together.
