People of his time loved Burroughs's writings found in his books with titles like Birds and Poets and Ways of Nature. They used to call him the "Grand Old Man of Nature." He looked the part, too, with his long white beard and feathery hair. He felt it was his "duty to record his own unique perceptions of the natural world."
