法薩爾大學 (Vassar College) 的創辦人--馬修‧法薩爾 (Matthew Vassar) 生於1792年4月29日

法薩爾女子大學在1861年1月得到政府許可成立，並且在1865年9月正式對外招生，當時共有353位學生與30位教職員，其中大部分都是女性。雖然現在已經是男女合校了，但是法薩爾大學仍然是美國最頂尖的文學藝術大學之一。該學校的畢業生包括了1917年畢業，也是第一位因為詩作而贏得普利茲獎 (Pulitzer Prize) 的愛德娜‧聖文森‧蜜萊 (Edna St. Vincent Millay) ；以及1878年畢業的第一位女性婦科醫生海倫‧普特南 (Helen C. Putnam) ；以及1974年畢業的維琪‧麥爾斯‧拉格蘭基 (Vicki Miles-LaGrange) ，她是第一位宣誓成為美國律師的非裔美國女性。

Vassar Female College was chartered in January 1861. It opened in September 1865 with 353 students and thirty faculty members, most of them women. Now coed, Vassar continues to be ranked among the top liberal arts colleges in the U.S. Graduates include Edna St. Vincent Millay (1917), the first woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for poetry; Helen C. Putnam (1878), one of the first woman gynecologists; and Vicki Miles-LaGrange (1974), the first African American woman to be sworn in as a U.S. Attorney.
