In 1891, Pershing became a professor of military science at the University of Nebraska. After four years at the university, Pershing joined the cavalry. During the summer of 1896, Pershing was given the job of escorting some roaming Cree Indians back to Canada. He learned from that experience how brave and tough the Native American forces were. He also learned about the bravery and dedication of African American troops when he was assigned to the 10th Cavalry. He respected these people who were different from him -- and they respected him, as well.
