Pershing's victory in Europe and his strong character earned him the admiration and respect of Americans of all creeds and colors. But Pershing said it was the American troops who deserved the hero's acclaim. He gave credit to his men before a joint session of Congress (when both senators and representatives are present) when he returned from Europe. And he called his troops heroes again in his Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiography, My Experiences in the World War.
